There's a legend, that goes along with this subtly coloured gemstone. The Romans believed that the aquamarine was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea. They believed that it had fallen out of the treasure box of the sirens and washed up on the shore. Because of this, sailors would wear the stone carved into the shape of Neptune and wear it around their necks as an amulet to guard them again danger at sea. Thus leading people to believe that the gem held more power when submerged in water.

When I was little, we'd go to visit my Gran and Grandpa. Between lying on the fluffy rug, underneath the glass coffee table and trying not to dislodge the bricks that ran along the edge of their veggie patch as I tiptoed along it, there was always one object in their house that I could happily play with for hours.

My gran had a carved wooden box, full of treasure in the form of polished beach stones. Piece of agate, quarts, jasper, serpentine and pretty pebbles that had been picked up over the years and either polished naturally, or in her tiny rock tumbler, which is now mine. There was something so satisfying about placing my hand in amongst those cold shiny rocks and it did feel like treasure.

Gran's still got the box sitting under a table in her living room and every time I'm at their house I have to resist the urge to have a look inside.I doubt very much there was any aquamarine in there, maybe a bit of amethyst, but if those were the siren's, they should have been in a better made treasure chest. Never trust sirens. Never ends well.

Aquamarine 14-4313, the colour to really irritate sirens in.
