On the 2nd Day of Christmas...

... this blogger gave to thee...
... two fancy pens...
... and a lego man made of a tree.

How many times a day do you pick up a pen and write?

Probably less frequently now that everyone has a computer, tablet, email and phones. Sometimes, after a prolonged period of not picking up a pen and handwriting something, you can feel it in your wrist, as it aches in a particular way that only occurs when you have your hand pressed into the writing position.

Personally, I handwrite every day, keeping lists of jobs that come through work, notes on issues and scribbles of designs. That said, I also handwrite a long on my tablet, my favourite app being a sketchbooks app I tried to write a post on, then they completely reformatted it and I haven't sorted out... perhaps I'll do it as a comparison/review in the New Year.

Never the less, when you're writing by hand, your pen is incredibly important. Do you prefer a roller ball, fountain or fine line tip? Cheap plastic every day pens or specially bought favourite? Currently, my favourite is a Pilot V|Ball 0.5 which I got on offer in the supermarket, it's a little scratchy, but it has a fine nib which keeps my cursive neat. So today for day two, I've got two interesting pen designs to show you, both of which have a unique slant to the traditional implement.

Align, a twist ballpoint pen, has been designed by Poetic Lab for London Based design house, Beyond Object, with a unique dislocated twist mechanism for raising and lowering the pen nib. Otherwise this is a very simple, elegant brushed metal pen, beautiful in itself, but the mechanism, jutting out from the main body of the pen tempts you into making its sculptural form functional.
Made out of aerospace grade aluminium, with internally fitted brass gears similar to those used within the movements of watches and clocks, when the middle section is aligned with the main body of the pen, the nib appears, when it is disjointed it disappears. A simple and elegant movement and unlike your traditional Biro. Within this moveable middle section, there is also a cleverly concealed clip, made to sit flush into the body of the barrel, allowing you to slip your pen securely into a pocket, or atop a notebook without damaging the aesthetic.
Sculptural, simplistic and elegant, the Align Pen still retains one important aspect of a pens functionality... the ability to nervously retract the nib whilst processing your thoughts.

Unlike the Align Pen, the POLAR Pen created by designer, Andrew Gardner of Indiedesign, is all about the multi-functionality of the simple writing implement and the playfulness often sought for whilst you're thinking about your next sentence or drawing.
Externally, it looks a simple enough design, an elegantly formed, relatively common place aesthetic which looks not dissimilar to a jazzed up fine liner, however it is within the construction of the product that the Polar Pen begins to come to life.

Made up of thirteen gold, gun metal or silver plated neodymium rings which are slipped over the ink cartridge, fitted with a pen tip, clip, caps and if desired, a stylus tip, it is the magnetic nature of the neodymium - a rare earth metal - which gives the pen its playful and curious quality. It brings that ability for nervous fidgeting and compulsive disassembly, many of us subconsciously do as we use the humble pen.

Initially prototyped to find a way around the traditional productions techniques such as gluing, compression fittings or threads. By incorporating the magnets Gardner not only managed to achieve this, but created a pen which not only self constructs - to a point - and self caps through its own magnetism, but can transform into a compass or spinner, part of a projectile launcher or battery powered circuit, it's limited only by your imagination and level of procrastination/boredom whilst working.

I think most people would end up spending more time on the playing aspects of this pen than their penmanship.

Both designs are unique, though the Polar Pen in looks alone is very reminiscent of those swap point pencils the kids I was friends with in the nineties were obsessed with, and they're both beautiful in their simplicity. But one of the nicest aspects of both these pen designs, is the fact that they were both Kickstarter projects, which were successfully funded into fruition by their fans and admirers and are not purchasable products in the world.

That's nice.

Merry Christmas! Part three tomorrow...

Pantone Colour of the Year 2014: Radiant Orchid II

See, this is the fun part of the Pantone Colour of the Year post, finding loads of lovely bits and bobs which are approximately that colour. Radiant Orchid was actually a hard one to find matches for, because it's neither a very blue purple or a very pink purple, it's also strangely bright and muted at the same time. But I have done my best to find fourteen lovely items which are approximately the right colour and I love, to the point where, I have worn no.1 and when no.4 came into work, I was seriously considering them as my new set of specs, plus I spent a lot of my time at uni with part of my hair dyed with no.6 as well as other colours (but this is definitely the closest to Radiant Orchid).

See, I even have tried and tested colour match ideas for you! The rest I will just lust after from now on...

6. Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Dye in Mystic Heather from Manic Panic | Link
7. Closet Purple Printed Band Hem Skater Dress from New Look | Link
8. Lime Crime Zodiac Glitter in Libra from Lime Crime| Link
9. Converse Ct Lite Ox in Iris Orchid from Office | Link
10. Slight Seconds Leather Boho Pop Mini in Ultra Violet from Bohemia | Link

12. Konstsmide 80 LED Berry Lights in Purple from Amazon | Link
13. Satin Shelley Tea Cup and Saucer in Purple from Coastline Imports | Link
14. Lime Crime Eyeliner in Orchidaceous from Lime Crime| Link

After finding all these bits and bobs, to be truthful, I'm actually a little sad about this colour. I genuinely don't think it will suit my skintone (though it will suit both my sisters), so any Radiant Orchid in my life will be in accessory form alone. Perhaps a nice nail polish...

Dulux Colour of the Year: Indigo Night

Please forgive the two sets of blue suede shoes, I could resist and I'm ashamed to say that I bumped a set of royal blue Converse Ox Lite's for them. I'll go and hang my head in that corner over there...

1) Benefit BAD gal Mascara in Blue - I went through a year or two were I wore nothing but blue mascara, is it sad that I'm enjoying its catwalk return? | Link
2) Karen Millen Dress with Floral Embroidery from ASOS - a little old fashioned, but I'm completely in love! | Link
83) Barry M Dazzle Dust in DD98 Petrol Black - my favourite eyeshadow! It's the one I wear if I'm dressing up and want to look fancy or make my eyes look über green. It's a perfect mix of dark blue black base and peacock/purple sheen...it's just beautiful! | Link
4) Tennyson (Blue Tortoiseshell Glasses) by Paul Smith | Link
5) Scalloped Front Tab Across Body Bag in blue from ASOS - *quietly places in shopping basket*| Link
6) Christian Louboutin Rolando in Navy | Link
7) Blue Stamp Cufflinks by Clare Hillerby - when I started jewellery at uni, she was (and still is) a complete idol. I fell in love with her jewellery because it's subtle and elegant and beautiful...she has her own style, which is something I still haven't found | Link | Clare Hillerby
8) Original 1227 Table Light by Anglepoise | Link
9) Blue Pocket Postal Notebook by Moleskin | Link
10) Blue Adjustable Flower Earrings by Gulnur Ozdaglar - these are made of recycled plastic. Her jewellery is spectacular | Link | Gulnur Ozdaglar
11) Anthropologie Spot of Tea Mug | Link
12) Suede Wood Platforms in Navy from Kling | Link
13) Gosh Limited Edition Nail Varnish in Tilted Blue - I almost bought this last week, I'm avoiding wearing nail varnish while buying tonnes of it! My depression buying has always been makeup based and right now that obsessive purchasing is of nail varnish. | Link

So there are thirteen lovely lovely Indigo Night inspired bits and bobs. I want them all!

Enjoy!

Monday Moodboard: Dulux Colour of the Year

1. Tut-topshop by Eleonore Bridge (via Design Crush Blog)

3. Through My Window by no-soap-was-harmed (via Pinterest)
4. Blueberry Pancakes by Chang Pick Yin (via A Blog With A View)
5. Still Life by Anna Williams Photography (via Pinterest)

Much like Pantone, Dulux creates a colour of the year for the paint range, this year it's Indigo Night, a blue which looks like the dusty matt skin of a blueberry or the colour of a good bruise...I don't know if that make the colour sound appealing or not, but it's the colours it brings to mind.

It's not quite the jewel tone that Pantone's Emerald eludes too, but it's a rich, dark and comforting colour, which could very easily translate into home furnishing and clothes. A colour which could be a bit scary in my little room, especially after I switched from dark magenta too a pale buttery yellow, but in the right space would be really imposing. That said I keep seeing people pinning a picture of a small black bathroom and it looks incredibly luxurious with the white roll top bath and thick herringbone flooring. I'd happily cocoon myself for a couple of hours reading in a bathroom like that.

Anyway as with the Pantone Moodboard, the colour doesn't match precisely but there's a definite tone...a bit of a Bowie tone me things...

Pantone Colour of the Year: Emerald

So for the Monday Moodboard last week - which returned after a long absence -  not only do you get some lovely shade related photos but this week you get thirteen emerald(ish) coloured treats for 2013's colour.

Again, I don't think Pantone could have picked a nicer colour and everything on this, I genuinely like and would like in my life...at least the few I could afford.

1) Ciate Creme Nail Polish in Ditch The Heels | Link
2) Faceted Wooden Earrings in Turquoise by Anthe-Stolz from DaWanda | Link
3) Andy Spectacles from Selima Optique | Link
4) Zoya Nail Polish in Ivanka | Link
5) Gosh Velvet Touch Eyeliner in Woody Green - this is one of my favourite eyeliners, they're really soft and easy to apply, they're also packed with pigment and last ages! Only downside is they slide a bit, so use a primer! | Image | Link
6) Emerald Christian Louboutin Pumps via Pinterest | Link
7) Vintage Clock London Emerald Green via Design Atelier Article (Etsy) | Link
8) Moleskin Notebook in Oxide Green - Pantone do do a specifically Emerald notepad, but I'm sorry, a moleskin just can't be beat! | Link
9) Alexander McQueen Flower Lace Strapless in Green (Emerald) via Lyst | Link
10) Green Polka Dot Scarf from Wanelo | Link
11) Barry M Dazzle Dust in 73 Emerald - this was the first eyeshadow I bought when I left school and broke away from my 'safe Emily' makeup. The blue mascara years may have been a mistake but the pink hair never will be. Barry M Dazzle Dusts have been a staple of my makeup bag since then, they're very highly pigmented and worth the money...unless they explode in your bag and go over your brand new bright yellow sneakers! Grrr... | Image | Link
12) Jasper Conran  for Wedgwood Chinoiserie Green Teacup from John Lewis | Image | Link
13) Vintage Emerald Earrings (14kt Yellow Gold and White Gold) from Cynthia Findlay Antiques | Image | Link

I could so easily go full out green from that list and I just hope that the fashion world picks up on Pantone's prediction, as Emerald really is a beautiful jewel tone and I'm bored of muted colours and neons. Plus I'd really quite like a pair of crystal green glasses. My glasses at the moment are crystal grey and the pair I'm looking at at work are crystal purple. I always seem to be drawn to the crystal frames (i.e. translucent plastic) and I have no idea why!

Anyway, hope you enjoy the list and I will type up my window posts now that my latest window is in and I've taken some photos. For now, on my day off, I have some work work to do and a cardigan to search for because I don't know where you are, but it's cold, windy and trying to snow here at the moment. So a nice day all round.

Sweet Dreams Interupted With Random Thoughts

Don't you hate it when you either can't sleep because there are ideas whirring around your head like an obnoxiously hyperactive toddler, or you wake up and need to write down something before you forget it. I used to keep a pad and a pen with a light in it by the bed, until the light died, now I just keep a big pad with a marker. But you can probably imagine the state of some of my notes since half the time I don't put on the light.

Post My Pillow by Veinticuatrodents takes the appearance and function of a post-it note and keeps itself convientiently close by for those night time notations. Add a light to the pen and you'd have a winner, otherwise prepare to put on the light and wake up enough to note things down. That, and don't just reach out for your cushion and start writing, God only knows what pieces of your bedding you'd be ruining!

The ink, fortunately is water soluble for repeat uses, simple rinse it off using cold water (no soap) and there you go, more space for more night time notes.

On the 11th Day of Christmas...

...this blogger gave to thee...
...eleven creative spaces...
...ten words for reading...
...nine balloon dresses...
...eight resolutions
...seven pretty shoesies...
...six party dresses...
...five gold rings!..
...four collared hangers...
...three Mad Men...
...two hedgehog gloves...
...and a house to dunk into your tea.

Thought a few creative spaces might give some inspiration towards 2011's New Years Resolutions. Personally I'm liking lots of blackboards, inspiration washing lines, crate shelves and novel storage solutions such as clogs for knitting needles. But lots of good, inspirational clutter! Never let anyone tell you your work space is a mess, if it works for you, it just does. Though if it's genuinely just a mess, start the New Year properly and give it a tidy. If only to stop the comments!

Doodle Duvet

This Stitch Design Works duvet set takes me back to being a kid, when my little sister doodled all over my alphabet duvet cover. She also doodled over my copy of Emily's Paintbox & the hymn book my great-grandmother gave me for our Christening. No love - you will never be fully forgiven for that one.

However, this Doodle Duvet, which was awarded Best New Product at UK trade fair Top Drawer, comes with 8 coloured wash-out pens and is printed up like lined notepaper. Perfect for scribbling down those late night ideas and designs or leaving messages...though, if you're anything like me, finding the right pen would be the big issue and without a doubt I'd pick up a permanent marker. Doh!

Make sure to use wash out pens! And if you don't like lined paper buy a pack of their pens and a set of plain white sheets. These would be absolutely perfect for kids, although, it could give them ideas. Maybe not such a good plan!

I Carry Your Heart With Me

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

- EE Cummings

I saw this design for Capsule Letters on a random website I was linked too via another blog, called Poketo and it reminded me of that EE Cummings poem, I Carry Your Heart With Me. In all fairness, it also reminded me of Ted Noten's solid gold Wedding Pills but I prefer Cummings.

I wasn't the type of person to carry around photos of friends or deeply meaningful nicknack's when I was younger, unless you count a huge number of cinema tickets meaningful. But my friend Fe wrote out Max Ehrmann's Desiderata and Billy Connolly's alternative Desiderata for me when we were in second year of uni. I think it was because I'd never read them and I was a bit low at the time, but I folded them up, put them in my wallet and then got it stolen the following year. Gutted. I loved that purse and I loved that my friend had taken the time to hand write these HUGE poems for me. Anyway, the point is, I rewrote Ehrmann's version and stuck it in my new - distinctly suckier - purse and they're the only none currency/identification I do carry.

However, I'm really attracted to this design, partially because of my partiality for boxes and lockets and hiding things away, partly because of the novelty of the pill form. So like the poem in my purse, you open it up, read the content and feel a little better. It's not a pill to cure all ills, but it's a sweet placebo.

36 Pencils and a Plastic Connector

...and voilà, you have a bowl!

How amazingly simple and beautiful is this? This bowl is the brainchild of Dutch designer Michael Cornelissen and is a tribute to the ubiquitous hexagonal colouring pencil we've all been brought up with.

Not only beautiful, but practical. Imagine the possibilities for the overly organised (or indeed horrendously disorganised) artist, designer or writer - all your pencils arranged by colour, grade or size. Okay three possibilities, but I'm sure all you creative types could come up with a few more. And if you have no strong feelings towards the arrangements of your stationary, hey, it's a bowl, artfully arrange your fruit!
