Dulux Colour of the Year 2015: Copper Blush II

WARNING: MAY CONTAIN METALLICS

Dulux Colour of the Year is Copper Blush... did you expect anything less than copper overload?

Especially coming from a (failed) jeweller? You're really lucky I didn't just put up a picture of a sheet of copper and some wire! That would have done me, but instead I've ended up with fifteen Copper Blush items I would not be unhappy with. Then again, a reel of thick electrical cable to strip down into huge coils of lovely new copper wire would make me happy too, especially as I used the last/most of my old one making crocheted flowers.

As I said in my last post, I actually think that this is a great colour for fashion and objects, it's got a really great rose gold quality to it and skirts between really quite an orange copper, right back to being very pink in hue.

Plus, nude colours have been big the last few years, so, let's face it, this is just another nude to add to your palette.

  6. Blush with Copper Accents Scarf by Francesca's via Allwomenstalk | Link
  7. Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow in '65 Pink Gold' via ASOS | Link Image
  8. Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in Nudist from Soap and Glory | Link Image

  13. Essie Nail Lacquer in 'Penny Talk' from Essie | Link
  14. Tricolour Gold & Platinum Wedding Rings by Niessing  from Orro Glasgow | Link
  15. 'Dinner and Romance' Dress from Modcloth | Link
But alas, I don't think Copper Blush is my colour, too pale for me. I can wear bright yellow, bright red, bright pink or greens and feel no dent in my, albeit tiny amount of confidence, but put me in white or a nude colour and I feel really self concious.

Bar, when my hair went that peachy colour when it was bleached and the pink was all but gone, I loved that. And I would very much like those headphones, so when I'm drinking my favourite cocktail, the Moscow Mule*, in a copper mug, I can listen to some good music and quietly get drunk in my own little world**.

Unexpectedly good colour choice Dulux!
.

* If you fancy a Moscow Mule, mix two shots of vodka with the juice of half a lime and your favourite ginger beer to taste. Serve in a copper mug if you can, but if not, just over lots of ice. Plus, if you're feeling fancy, add some raspberries for a Raspberry Moscow Mule, which is the drink I had when I got my degree results in the beer garden of one of the uni locals.

** Yep, drinking alone is kinda the mood I'm feeling for today.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2015: Marsala II

As always, the fun part now of the Pantone Colour of the Year posts, finding Marsala inspired objet d'art.

And like I said on my first post, a bit like last year, this was actually a really hard colour to find close matches too because of that muted quality this particular red has. But, I have done my best and my board has the fifteen most muted wine shades I could find for you.

  1. Essie Nail Lacquer in 'In Stitches' from Essie | Link
  2. 3 in 1 Colour Block Gloves in Red (Burgundy) from Accessorize | Link
  3. Pomegranate Necklace (Ruby and Oxidized Silver) by Artesserae on Etsy | Link
  4. Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencil in '210 Keep It Classy' from Maybelline | Link
  5. Julianne Hough Suede Oxfords in Burgundy via Pinterest | Link
  6. Ombre Herringbone Cashmink Scarf in Navy/Burgundy from John Lewis | Link
  7. Manic Panic Classic Semi-Permanent Hair Dye in 'Vampire's Kiss' from Manic Panic | Link
  8. 'Props To Your Panache' Heels in Cranberry from Modcloth  | Link
  9. 'Cavendish Clutch' by Stella McCartney | Link
  10. 'Garnet Cluster Ring' (Oxidised silver ring with moving briolette garnet beads and 18ct gold) by Marianne Anderson | Link
  11. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Washed in 'Oxheart' from Converse | Link
  12. Bourjois Color Edition Cream Eye Shadow in '05 Prune Nocturne' from Superdrug | Link | Image
  13. Butter London Nail Lacquer in 'Tramp Stamp' from Butter London | Link
  14. Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in 'Metallic Merlot' | Link
  15. Chi Chi Beaded Sleeveless Skater Dress from Dorothy Perkins | Link

I don't know about you, but I would wear/use pretty much everything on this board (I even have four and twelve). Bar possibly the dress. I like it a lot, but I'd look like... well... I wouldn't look good in it. I'd look pretty appalling in it. But someone else would look lovely...

... I'm starting to wish I'd picked another dress now. But my little sister let me down on her assistance for the great dress hunt. Damn her and her skinny britches!

One of the items I'd really like to pick up on is the ring, which is by Marianne Anderson, who is a wonderful Glaswegian jeweller, who I don't know personally, but have said hello too from time to time on Pinterest. I really wanted to give one of her rings pride of place as part of the 5th Day of Christmas, but the ring I picked, alongside the other designs, didn't suit the collection. I was going to save her until next year, but Pantone, has let me post it early because she uses a lot of those beautiful wine coloured garnets in her work. I just love the juxtaposition between simply set garnets and then quite chunky, oxidised and textured silver bands. It's a hard balance to walk between a good chunky ring and a bad chunky ring, Marianne's are definitely good chunky.

As for the rest, I am aware that they're very female-centric boards, with dresses and makeup and jewellery, but, hey, I'm a girl. And I look for things I like, I like jewellery, I like nail varnish, I like makeup, I like scarves and Converse and dying my hair bright colours.

I also like that a deep red might get a bit more usage this year, I'm not a pale colour person, I like the deep, the dark and the jewels... three things which as soon as Christmas passes seem to be ignored.

Maybe Marsala will prove me wrong, if not, get the bottle out and get pouring.

Dulux Colour of the Year 2014: Teal II

Teal Trivia! The first recorded use of teal as a colour name was in 1917 and it is believed to have been named after the muted blue-green feathers that surround the eye of the dabbling-duck known as the Common Teal.

So the colour has only been known as Teal for ninety-seven years. It's practically a baby. It will also be known dabbling-duck in my head now. And so you know, a dabbling-duck is a duck who feels mostly from the surface of the water rather than diving.

Now, we have the traditional nail polish, which you know I can't resist; heels and a dress; makeup and a mug; comfy, comfy sneakers, that have a double tongue which I've never understood, but are my comfiest pair and heels I may well be able to walk in and there's also a ring which is a planter and my new glasses, which I admit are very, very borderline teal, but after seeing some interpretations of the colour, I'd count them, though I am biased.

So here they are, my Dulux Colour of the Year 2014 list of teal toned treats:

1. Bleach Super Cool Colours in Sea Punk from Bleach London | Link
2. Color Show Nail Polish in Superpower Blue  from Maybelline | Link
3. Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Electric from Stila Cosmetics | Link
4. Kebaya Mug in Turquoise from Anthropologie | Link
5. Pepe Jeans 'Avery' aka my new glasses from Clelland and Boyd Opticians| Link
6. Teal Blue Origami Paper Cranes Ladies Scarf by Talented Apple on Etsy | Link
7. Zodiac Glitter in Cancer from Lime Crime | Link
8. Wearable Planter Icosahedron Ring in Teal by Wearable Planter on Etsy | Link
9. Teal Polka Dot Classic Satchel from Mozzypop | Link
10. Converse Allstar Low Double Tongue Mrrcn Blwt Smu from Office | Link
11. Editor Teal Heel by Not Rated from Heels.com | Link
12. Pigment in Teal from MAC | Link
13.Globe 10" in Green by Found by Fab | Link
14. Daymee Dress in Teal from Coast | Link

The fact that dabbling-duck wavers between green and blue makes it a relatively easy colour both to find and wear. You just pick the tone that suits you, or at least that's the story I'm sticking too since my collection does wander kind of carelessly through the spectrum.

You can be daring and relatively bright or safe, neutral and muted, but either way, it's a good colour and would look particularly nice with bright blue pinks, corals (which is the complimentary colour of choice) or even with a bit of Radiant Orchid.

Lucky that!

Pantone Colour of the Year 2014: Radiant Orchid II

See, this is the fun part of the Pantone Colour of the Year post, finding loads of lovely bits and bobs which are approximately that colour. Radiant Orchid was actually a hard one to find matches for, because it's neither a very blue purple or a very pink purple, it's also strangely bright and muted at the same time. But I have done my best to find fourteen lovely items which are approximately the right colour and I love, to the point where, I have worn no.1 and when no.4 came into work, I was seriously considering them as my new set of specs, plus I spent a lot of my time at uni with part of my hair dyed with no.6 as well as other colours (but this is definitely the closest to Radiant Orchid).

See, I even have tried and tested colour match ideas for you! The rest I will just lust after from now on...

1. Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Fishnet from Urban Decay | Link
2. Devonshire Row Nail Polish from Nails Inc | Link
3. Hearthstone Scarf in Purple from J. Crew | Link
4. Pepe Jeans 'Eleanor' Glasses from work | Pepe Jeans Wesbite
5. Moleskin Coloured Professional Notebook in Pink from Moleskin | Link
6. Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Dye in Mystic Heather from Manic Panic | Link
7. Closet Purple Printed Band Hem Skater Dress from New Look | Link
8. Lime Crime Zodiac Glitter in Libra from Lime Crime| Link
9. Converse Ct Lite Ox in Iris Orchid from Office | Link
10. Slight Seconds Leather Boho Pop Mini in Ultra Violet from Bohemia | Link
11. Jessica Simpson Given Jazzberry Suede Heels via Heels.com | Link
12. Konstsmide 80 LED Berry Lights in Purple from Amazon | Link
13. Satin Shelley Tea Cup and Saucer in Purple from Coastline Imports | Link
14. Lime Crime Eyeliner in Orchidaceous from Lime Crime| Link

After finding all these bits and bobs, to be truthful, I'm actually a little sad about this colour. I genuinely don't think it will suit my skintone (though it will suit both my sisters), so any Radiant Orchid in my life will be in accessory form alone. Perhaps a nice nail polish...

On the 11th Day of Christmas...

...this blogger gave to thee...
...eleven lovely lacquers...
...ten bugs and beasties...
...nine feathered sculptures...
...eight bits of telly...
...seven shoes to choose from...
...six party dresses...
...five gold rings!..
...four fancy fish...
...three granulations...
...two bits of wood...
...and a calendar made of tea.

So my obsessive collecting of nail polish reached a head this year, when I realised that every time I had a bad day, I reached for the supermarket nail polish stand as a cheer giving treat. At least it's better than comfort eating or biting my nails the way I used too.

But for the 11th day of Christmas, I thought I should pay homage to my obsession and give you eleven of my favourite nail polishes. Now I will give a wee disclaimer, I had intended not to do swatches, the colours, never, ever come off  right when you take photos, I don't have the prettiest of nails, plus I also took a huge chunk out of one of them, (past the quick) with a knife while cooking before Christmas, so they look pretty gnarly. But today the post looked pretty shoddy, so have spent the day trying to pick and pic the colours I wanted...so apologies for how pathetic and badly applied they are!

Now, here is my list of loveliness..
  Maybelline Colorshow in Lavender Lies
Turns out, this is the perfect colour to begin with. Lavender Lies, it's the colour - in my opinion - of a purple Smartie. Almost chalky but still with a good shine if you don't bother with topcoat. But the reason it's perfect to begin with, is it almost exactly matches this years Pantone Colour of the Year, 18-3224 - Radiant Orchid.

Now my opinion the creme colours are better than the metallics in this range, but Maybelline Colorshow are among my favourite drug store brands. They're cheap at £3 a pop, they have excellent pigmentation, this one only needs 2 coats and the brushes are really reliably good in both size and quality. They're a wider brush, but not chunky and that'a s a very good thing. As is the fact that they are 3-Free!
Barbara Daly @ Tesco in Once Upon A Time
I love a good, bright pink crème nail polish. For years I hated pink, avoiding it at all cost and my pet hate is still Barbie pinks, baby pinks and pinks with blue shimmers, but a good bright magenta, that's just about perfect. Pink is gorgeous in the right shade and Barbara Daly from Tesco is perfect bar one thing. They discontinued Flamingo for Once Upon a Time and while they're basically the same, I still prefer my original - now slightly claggy - bottle of Flamingo which sits on my shelf. They have a standard brush, they're only little and this shade takes three coats as it's quite sheer and as far as I know Barbara Daly polishes are at least 1-Free.

 Nails Inc in Piccadilly Circus
Ahh, my first love when it comes to Nails Inc. I can't really afford £11 a pop for nail polish, but Glamour and Instyle magazines have them as a free gift now and then, and I will spend £11 on four magazines to get four polishes. Piccadilly Circus was the first of their polishes which found its way into my pathetically manicured hands and cemented my love of them (and possibly my addiction to nail polish full stop). It is a deep, dark pink, which while it dries darker than the bottle, is glossy and basically the colour I had my bedroom for a decade. Plus, it takes two coats, but even one has sufficed before. Nails Inc, I adore you despite your price!
Maxfactor Max Effect Mini Nail Polish in Fantasy Fire
So pretty I bought it twice (well, actually, I bought one, my lovely dad bought me the second bottle as a present - my pater has excellent taste!) This polish is a beautiful she purple with golden, almost orange sparkle...my favourite eye shadow, discontinued over a decade ago, was called Trifle and was purple with orange glitter, it sound wrong but it works. And it works with this polish too. As I said it's very sheer, and quite a watery polish and you can wear it alone, but you would been lots of layers. Put it over a plain purple polish and it takes two too get a nice even layer of sparkle to admire in the sunshine.
Rimmel London Space Dust Collection in 005 Total Eclipse
I only bought this at the start of November, I saw it and it reminded me of my favourite eye shadow and I bought it without realising it was textured. I am not a fan of textured nail varnish, I don't even particularly like the feeling of very glittery polishes on my nails - they feel like sandpaper - so avoid them like the plague, but this one is actually lovely! If you like textured/glitter polishes I have a sneaky second recommendation, which is Barry M Textured Polish in Countess, I've been wearing it since New Years Eve and love the colour. Countess, is an odd colour, a mixture of burgundy/purple and gold glitter, which is dark, but has enough twinkle to make it wearable. Downside again is the texture, it feels like I have emery boards on my nails, which isn't my cup of tea, but I have gotten used to it. It also chips, but because of the texture patches well and dries quickly. They're both tricky to remove, but easier than expected for a glitter, though I am covered in fine sparkles now.
Gosh Nail Lacquer in 627 Denim Delight
Gosh, while not new to me for most other make-up is new to me when it comes to nail varnish, and this is maybe not my favourite, I have a holographic one I don't wear but bring out to gawp at occasionally, however, Denim Delight is my most worn, I wear it to work, where it looks grey enough to be smart but blue enough to be unusual. I wear blue polish a lot as you will notice, and it still gets odd looks occasionally, but also gets nice comments too.
 Orly Mini Mani in Hairband
This for me is a Nails Inc dupe. Glamour Glitter is a top coat, it's a clear polish with two very fine sizes of silver gold glitter suspended in it, which was from a magazine a couple of years ago. It's perfect, but not available. And as I've said above, I don't wear a lot of glitter because of the texture, gut this is one I use a lot. But you can't get it, and I made up the rules, so here's a couple of dupes. If you like gold gold, go for Orly in Hairband, which I plumped for Hairband today over a black base as it has two sizes of the glitter particles. If you're more fond of the silver side, Barbara Daly in Wizardry

Nails Inc in Queen Victoria Street
My gran bought me this for Christmas, otherwise I wasn't going to have a second Nails Inc on my list, but it's a really bright crème jade green, which will probably become a favourite this year. It's the same as Piccadilly Circus, standard brush, good coverage etc, but most of the Nails Inc I've tried have been of a high quality. It also looks like last years Pantone Colour of the Year, 17-5641 Emerald.

Revlon Nail Enamel in Posh
Posh is a bright British racing or snooker table green (which both photos fail to show, my is especially unreliable) and while I have lots of aquas and I have no bottles I would consider green green, bar this one. On my last post about nail varnish, where I showed a portion of my hoard, a follower mentioned she'd been buying a lot of greens, which of course spurred me on to find my own. This is a great shade, standard brush, two coat coverage and a big bottle, but stains a bit when you remove it, so you need to take care not to smear it over your skin because it takes a while to get off.
Rimmel London Professional Finish in 420 Aqua Cool
I wear this colour more than any other.
Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint in Greenberry
Another of my favourite inexpensive brands at £3 a pop and also 3-Free. I used to actually hate Barry M polishes, don’t get me wrong, the colours have always been fab, but the application, at least the few I tried, were streaky, thin and slow drying. Not so slow now, the Gelly polishes are particularly good and have incredible shine. I've got a good few of these colours, and Greenberry is very me. Aquas and pale blues are my safety colours.

Ok, so bonus time, mostly because it's my secret weapon and oh my god is it worth the money. My secret weapon for my nails is Sally Hasens Insta Dri, which is the best top coat I've every used for three reasons,

1. I got it for a steal while the supermarket was selling them off, if only I'd bought more than one!
2. It's got an incredibly glossy finish, which makes me rub my nails on my clothes like one would an apple, just to see how shiny I can get them and
3. The most important factor in this being a secret weapon. It is a quick dry top coat which sets your nails in a few seconds. Which means (unless your nails are really thickly applied and you don't give it any time to dry before applying the topper) no more smudging, no more looking insane trying to pick things up without messing them up and no more bed sheet imprints!

Is that just me? I tend to do my nails in the evening before bed, if they're not set, I get fabric imprints in my nails and there's only so much extra top coat that can help!

So that's it, the 11th day, I reek of nail varnish remover, under my nails are all different colours and I've only made one little felt bird today.

Now for a cuppa.

Polish Problem...

You know how a couple of posts ago, I mentioned that I had a bit of a nail varnish problem? Yeah, this is only about half of it. Apparently my way of distracting myself on my really depressed days is by buying nail varnish. And given many of the places I've been buying them from currently have three for two offers, it's way too easy. Now, I'm not buying expensive brands, there are a couple in there which were a little pricier and a few that should have been but I got at the factory shop across the road from work for a fraction of the price (seriously I bought an Essie polish in there for £3 which should have been upwards of £8/9) but the fact that most of this hall has been bought since just before Christmas is bad!

There are worst things I could be consoling myself with, and I do love nail varnish, but well, the fact is that my nails are so weak at the moment that they're peeling and breaking like mad. A couple of weeks ago they were almost back to a good length and looking nice, and then the peeling began again and now I'm back at the quick and have torn my thumb nail so close that it's really sore.

So basically, to make myself feel better I'm buying something which I can't use and therefore just taunts me. I may as well be buying clothes which don't fit or shoes I can't walk in.

*sigh*

If I was willing to have my photo taken I should have started a make up blog, seeing I can't seem to stop buying the stuff! For example I would definitely recommend to you Maybelline's Color Show Nail Varnish, as it's really highly pigmented, dried quickly and they're releasing some brilliant colours. I would recommend Barry M on colour selection, but tell you they're incredibly thin and the ones I own either need 4 coats or you need a similarly coloured base, so it's not the polish to use if you need to be quick. I'd also point out that Rimmel's nail varnish is great, but their 60 second formula dries slower than any other and can be on the thick side, however they also have double width brushes, which make them really easy to apply. And I'd mention that Barbara Daly polish is one of my favourites as it's cheap, has good coverage, dries quickly and is formaldehyde free! Which for a drug store nail polish is I think verging on the holy grail.

I'd also reveal one of my favourite polishes in by Nails Inc and while I've bought/been bought some, most of mine have been bought by buying three or four issues of magazines giving them away...oh don't look at me that way, they're £11 a pop and the magazine is £3 at most! Thus for 4 it costs me just over the cost of 1 polish! That's a win to me!

I told you I had a problem...

{Update: I bought three more this morning and, had there been any colours I hadn't snaffled already, I was going to buy another three when I had to nip back to the shops this afternoon. It's been a bad few days. So why not drown myself in formaldehyde and other horrific chemicals.}

Dulux Colour of the Year: Indigo Night

Please forgive the two sets of blue suede shoes, I could resist and I'm ashamed to say that I bumped a set of royal blue Converse Ox Lite's for them. I'll go and hang my head in that corner over there...

83) Barry M Dazzle Dust in DD98 Petrol Black - my favourite eyeshadow! It's the one I wear if I'm dressing up and want to look fancy or make my eyes look über green. It's a perfect mix of dark blue black base and peacock/purple sheen...it's just beautiful! | Link

5) Scalloped Front Tab Across Body Bag in blue from ASOS - *quietly places in shopping basket*| Link
6) Christian Louboutin Rolando in Navy | Link
7) Blue Stamp Cufflinks by Clare Hillerby - when I started jewellery at uni, she was (and still is) a complete idol. I fell in love with her jewellery because it's subtle and elegant and beautiful...she has her own style, which is something I still haven't found | Link | Clare Hillerby

Pantone Colour of the Year: Emerald

So for the Monday Moodboard last week - which returned after a long absence -  not only do you get some lovely shade related photos but this week you get thirteen emerald(ish) coloured treats for 2013's colour.

Again, I don't think Pantone could have picked a nicer colour and everything on this, I genuinely like and would like in my life...at least the few I could afford.

1) Ciate Creme Nail Polish in Ditch The Heels | Link
2) Faceted Wooden Earrings in Turquoise by Anthe-Stolz from DaWanda | Link
3) Andy Spectacles from Selima Optique | Link
4) Zoya Nail Polish in Ivanka | Link
5) Gosh Velvet Touch Eyeliner in Woody Green - this is one of my favourite eyeliners, they're really soft and easy to apply, they're also packed with pigment and last ages! Only downside is they slide a bit, so use a primer! | Image Link
6) Emerald Christian Louboutin Pumps via Pinterest | Link
7) Vintage Clock London Emerald Green via Design Atelier Article (Etsy) | Link
8) Moleskin Notebook in Oxide Green - Pantone do do a specifically Emerald notepad, but I'm sorry, a moleskin just can't be beat! | Link
9) Alexander McQueen Flower Lace Strapless in Green (Emerald) via Lyst | Link
10) Green Polka Dot Scarf from Wanelo | Link
11) Barry M Dazzle Dust in 73 Emerald - this was the first eyeshadow I bought when I left school and broke away from my 'safe Emily' makeup. The blue mascara years may have been a mistake but the pink hair never will be. Barry M Dazzle Dusts have been a staple of my makeup bag since then, they're very highly pigmented and worth the money...unless they explode in your bag and go over your brand new bright yellow sneakers! Grrr... | ImageLink
12) Jasper Conran  for Wedgwood Chinoiserie Green Teacup from John Lewis | Image | Link
13) Vintage Emerald Earrings (14kt Yellow Gold and White Gold) from Cynthia Findlay Antiques | Image | Link

I could so easily go full out green from that list and I just hope that the fashion world picks up on Pantone's prediction, as Emerald really is a beautiful jewel tone and I'm bored of muted colours and neons. Plus I'd really quite like a pair of crystal green glasses. My glasses at the moment are crystal grey and the pair I'm looking at at work are crystal purple. I always seem to be drawn to the crystal frames (i.e. translucent plastic) and I have no idea why!

Anyway, hope you enjoy the list and I will type up my window posts now that my latest window is in and I've taken some photos. For now, on my day off, I have some work work to do and a cardigan to search for because I don't know where you are, but it's cold, windy and trying to snow here at the moment. So a nice day all round.

Monday Mood Board: Autumnal Greys 2010

Row 1: Bridesmaid Dress by Sarah Seven, Grey Pumpkins via Lynn Goldfinger Abram
Row 2: Beauties Cottage by Helen Musselwhite, Untitled by Nikolinelr
Row 3: SHED & jewellery by Artemis Russell

While I don't tend to follow trends, occasionally one will catch my eye and this year one has. Guess what it is? Yep. Greys.

This is partly due to the fact that grey is probably my most frequently worn colour, one I'm told i do actually suit and I'm obsessed with Nail Inc. London, a brand which names every colour after a different London street and has embraced the Autumn/Winter grey trend.

Aren't pretty in their monochromeness? I think my nail varnish obsession of November may have subsided now luckily or I might be tempted by these, but all my nails have broken, split and been gnarled back down to the quick. I wish I had stronger nails, or never started biting them - a habit which I am also grossed out by - because they're very weak now and never stay long very long...and usually when I've managed I either ruin them by being in and out of a washing up bowl every two minutes or by filing, polishing & chipping them down in the workshop.

Incidentally, we aren't mentioning the workshop at the moment, I've not been in for months and I think I'll cry & have another flip out if I talk about it. Designers block is really getting ridiculous and making me even more hermit like, so if you're one of my friends from school or uni & haven't heard from me in months, please, please don't write me off, I really just don't know what to say to anyone without feeling like a desperate loser.

Doesn't explain how I can write in on my blog however.

More mood boards to come, I'm off down the shops in the snow...fun!
